In December 2011, I decided I wanted an online business because it would give me the freedom to work from anywhere in the world.
I visualized myself in my village blogging away and self-publishing in the heart of Kenya.
I imagined feeding my five chickens with the leftover breadcrumbs and talking to my four dogs; Simba, Mandela, Obama, and Shukrani.
But achieving my dream has not been easy
It took me a while to reach where I am today. I sometimes ask God why others succeeded immediately after blogging school in August 2012, and It took me over a year to make my first 100 dollars online.
When I look back; I see God’s hand in my business all along.
He was changing me. -I needed to be patient and to grow.
Some businesses grow pretty fast
Within a year, the owner is making a significant profit. Others, like Amazon, are like the Chinese bamboo.
Did you know it took Amazon about five years to make any real profit? People kept laughing at the founders concept and telling him to give up.
Let me share the story of the Chinese bamboo tree
Like every plant, the Chinese Bamboo tree requires nurturing. It needs water, fertile soil, and sunshine.
In its first year, you will not see any sign of activity.
In the second year, again, nothing is seen above the soil.
The third, the fourth, very little is seen if anything at all.
Your patience as a farmer is tested, and you begin to wonder if your efforts will amount to anything.
The story of the Chinese bamboo tree has been my story
My tax guy began to tell me to stop calling this a business. “Just call it a hobby Joyce! You are making very little money! When you deduct your Web-hosting, Aweber auto-responder, and monthly Grammarly fees, you are making Nada! Zero! Potato!”
Back to the story of the Chinese bamboo tree
Finally, in the fifth year, it all happens. Like a Miracle.
There is growth; not small growth, but the Chinese Bamboo tree grows 80 feet in just six weeks!
What this means is you need a lot of faith in God to know that things will work out. When people ridicule you, whether it’s your tax guy, friends or family, -hang in there.
When you don’t see growth in your business, continue learning. Learn different skills. Learn to podcast, create videos, copyright, SEO, and whatever skill will ultimately help you.
Network and make friends as much as you can during the dry spell
Those friends will assist you along your journey.
Believe and thank God for your success daily, even though it is not evident.
Remember what faith means:
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
God will reward your faith like the patient Chinese Tree farmer.
I have seen so much increase in my business that came suddenly; it has been like a miracle. God rewarded my patience and will reward you as well.
What has been your experience in your business?
