For many years, I struggled with decision making. I didn’t want to be held responsible for any decision in case things didn’t work out.
I was neither here nor there. If the crowd went one way, I simply followed.
I soon realized that being so indecisive was only hurting me. People were controlling many aspects of my life, and I started to feel miserable.
The decisions you make lead to the actions you will take, and this has an impact on how you lead your life. Will it be the life that you want or one that you will be unhappy with because you made a decision based on what someone else wanted for you? When it comes to decision making, there are some barriers that can hinder you.
Wanting to please others
At the end of the day, it all comes down to your happiness.
So when making decisions do not aim at pleasing others.
Many times we make the wrong decisions just because we think that we will please our parents, family or friends. An example is deciding to take a degree that your parents would love you to specialize in, yet you know that you would love to take a different one.
While you may be thinking that you are taking the degree or diploma, so you do not disappoint them, it will eventually be you doing the lousy career because you made a decision that will largely impact your life.
Thinking it is impossible
You may desire to do something, but your mindset may be holding you back from making the decision and taking action. Setting this barrier limits you from believing that you can do something and achieve it.
When you want to achieve your goal, you should no longer give excuses, but believe that it is possible, and there is a way.
Following the crowd
Following the trends or the ‘in thing’ is a costly decision. Such decisions are normally misguided and should be avoided.
Being in the majority does not always mean that something is right. When making decisions, always ask yourself; ‘what do I really want?’ This will keep you on track, and you will be able to take a firm stand.
Follow your heart and not the crowd. You will grow and also stand out compared to the majority.
Fearing the unknown
We are never sure of what the future holds, but the decisions we make in the present determine the future.
You may be held back from making a decision because you are not sure of the end result or how things will turn out.
It is better to take the risk and make the decision -rather than live with regret. Approach your decisions with confidence and you will be able to tackle whatever comes your way.
Don’t allow fear to numb you.
Lack of exposure or experience
At times, when we are not exposed to certain processes, we tend to think that something is impossible because we are yet to see it work.
This hinders us from making a decision about what we want.
Getting exposed and learning more about people who overcame situations like yours will give you the confidence to make up your mind and make the decision. Exposure reshapes your school of thought and shows you that you are just like other people in a different part of the world who make tough decisions.
Read more and get more insight into the lives of others.
This wealth of knowledge will go a long way in helping you to make decisions that are well-thought.
Your mind is powerful and with it, you can see beyond what your eyes see. It all starts in the mind. Your thoughts determine your actions. Open your mind and you will find that you can see beyond the limits and be more decisive. Decide to change your life and lead the life you want. Drop the ‘I can’t’ attitude. Get rid of the barriers and become a strong decision maker if you want to be happy.
